On November 3 and 4, consultations on clarification of provisions of the Law of Ukraine «On Ensuring the Functioning of Ukrainian as the State Language» for representatives of Hungarian, Slovak, Romanian, Roma, Czech and other communities residing in Zakarpattia were held in Uzhhorod and Berehove with the participation of representatives of Secretariat of the State Language Protection Commissioner, State Service of Ukraine for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience, Zakarpattya Regional State Administration.
Representative of the State Language Protection Commissioner, Chair of the Center for Public Diplomacy Andrii Vitrenko took part in the events.
Meeting participants paid attention to the consideration of certain norms of the language law currently important for representatives of national communities in the services sector, in the spheres of education, culture, printed media, book publishing and book distribution. In addition, issues relating to the use of the state language in the sphere of publicly available information like signs, markings, messages, etc. as well as in the sphere of public events planning and holding were discussed.
Representatives of numerous civil society organisations of national minorities of Zakarpattia and heads of certain amalgamated territorial communities of Berehove district of Zakarpattia region, where Hungarian-speaking population makes up the majority, confirmed their willingness to deepen dialogue and cooperation in the frames of the existing language legislation as well as to elaborate the appropriate provisions of the new version of the Law of Ukraine «On National Communities» together with representatives of public authorities.
